The Globe is responding to issues of hate directed at an individual and to gross inaccuracies about the nature and content of the show that are being spread in the media and on-line about the production we have programmed. 

The Globe Theatre stands by all our programming choices and the incredible artistry in Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer. 

The Globe Theatre is responsible for all programming choices. Not the performers contracted to do their jobs. Any concerns surrounding programming should be solely directed to The Globe Theatre. 

The online hate and rhetoric that the artists are now facing is rooted in transphobia and homophobia. We have zero tolerance for hate and discrimination, particularly when targeted at marginalized community members. 

Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer is a subversive “trickster” comedy featuring important issues about land-back politics. Humour is the main tool in this storytelling and what audiences are raving about. 

The Globe Theatre is proud to be a home for education and provide access to professional theatre for Regina’s youth. A long-standing tradition at the Globe, one that we are very proud of, is to provide schools with economically priced student matinee tickets to our productions. This occurred Wednesday, May 6, for our latest show Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer. 

Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer is written by Governor General Award-Winning playwright Kevin Loring. Mr. Loring is the Artistic Director of Indigenous Theatre at Canada’s National Arts Centre, one of the most significant artistic leadership positions in Canadian theatre. The Globe Theatre is honoured to play host to this prestigious production, which has previously been performed across the country to great reviews. Student matinees were also a part of the programming and were well attended. 

While external recognition is never the sole reason The Globe stands behind a work, it is affirming that this production has been embraced nationally for its artistry, humour, and importance. 

When we have productions not written for young children, we follow long-standing and appropriate processes in advance of our student matinees: 

• Content warnings are available online stating that the production was recommended for ages 14+ due to language and sexual content. 
• In this case, in addition to the content warning, all schools were called by a member of our staff to share explicit language and sexual content warnings.
• All attending schools confirmed their students would be Grade 10 or higher.
• Schools were specifically offered the opportunity to read the script in advance and were advised that copies were available for review.
• Regina’s Campbell Collegiate, who expressed concern after attending the play, confirmed after booking that they had read the play and subsequently chose to cancel tickets for their Grade 9 students based on the content.
• Prior to the performance, a Globe manager also advised teachers of one school sitting closest to the stage, that a performer would be pole dancing during the show. Schools were advised to use discretion when seating students near that section of the theatre. 

 The Globe Theatre understands that this production may make someone uncomfortable; art can challenge. It can also delight, inform, provoke thought, test assumptions, entertain, and create meaningful conversation. The role of a theatre company is to bring bold, innovative, thoughtful, and playful work to our community. 

Not every piece of art will resonate with every audience member, and that is okay. In this case, the play is using satire to explore themes of cultural history. 

In the future Globe will continue to ensure that we are diligent in ensuring our plays are well understood by any schools attending our matinees and will require signed waivers from the principals of schools attending.
