AUDITION NOTICE

Regina’s Globe Theatre requests submissions for

LES MISÉRABLES

A musical by ALAIN BOUBLIL and CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG
Based on a novel by VICTOR HUGO
Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International and CAMERON MACKINTOSH LTD.

In nineteenth century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe that Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter. Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world.

In-person auditions will be held in the following cities:
• Winnipeg, MB, on May 2nd and 3rd
• Regina, SK, on May 4th and 5th
• Edmonton, AB, on May 7th and 8th
Estelle Shook (Director), Evan Watts Smith (Music Director), and Jennifer Brewin (Globe Theatre’s Artistic Director) will be present for the auditions.

Note: A youth audition notice for Little Cosette and Young Eponine will be posted at a later date. Please do not submit for these roles until that notice has gone out.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Jean Valjean – Male 40s (Vocal Range: G#2 to B4)
High lyrics baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto.
A poor peasant who rises to affluence, has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.

Javert – Male 40s (Vocal Range: F2 to F#4)
Baritone. Must have a natural gravitas with ability to be expressive and dynamic.
Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate ‘law and order’ figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with rigid and merciless moral code.

Fantine & Ensemble – Female 30s (Vocal Range: F3 to Eb5)
Belts up to C, sings to E flat.
Poor but elegant factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although she is finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Thénardier & The Bishop of Digne/Ensemble – Male 30s/40s (Vocal Range: C2 to G4)
Baritone. Strong comic character role. Thénardier is a crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, selfish, boorish, vulgar. The Bishop is a religious man who, despite Valjean’s theft of his valuable possessions, sees past the convict and allows him to move on with his new life. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Madame Thénardier & Ensemble – Female 30s/40s (Vocal Range: G#3 to D5)
Belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, and vulgar. Strong character comedienne role. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Eponine & Ensemble – Female 20s (Vocal Range: F3 to E5)
An enormous belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Cosette & Ensemble – Female 20s (Vocal Range: Bb3 to C6)
Soprano with a light, young ‘floating’ sound, without heavy vibrato. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child); delicate, elegant, and vulnerable. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Enjolras & The Foreman – Male 20s (Vocal Range: A2 to G4)
High baritone/tenor. Very strong singer. Enjolras is a charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement. The Foreman is an overbearing, sleazy man who runs the factory. Sacks Fantine, leaving her destitute. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Marius & Ensemble – Male 20s (Vocal Range: A2 to Ab4)
High baritone with a strong A2. Member of the revolutionary student movement. Romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century ‘Byronic’ way. The actor in this role will also play various members of the ensemble.

Gavroche – Male/Female/Non-Binary 14+ (Vocal Range: B3-G5)
Young street urchin, left to fend for himself and live by his wits in the streets of Paris. Gavroche is brave, witty, and arrogant, with a youthful voice.

Male Identifying Ensemble – Ages 18-50+, Tenors and Baritones
The actors in the ensemble will cover various named and unnamed roles including members of the ABC Society, members of Thénardier’s Gang, Army Officers, The Chain Gang, Warders, Constables, Peasants, Factory Workers, Pimps, Wedding Guests, and other various roles.

Female Identifying Ensemble – Ages 18-50+, Sopranos and Mezzo Sopranos
The actors in the ensemble will cover various named and unnamed roles including members of the ABC Society, members of Thénardier’s Gang, Army Officers, The Chain Gang, Warders, Constables, Peasants, Factory Workers, Prostitutes, Wedding Guests, and other various roles.

SWINGS

2 swings to cover female identifying roles and 2 swings to cover male identifying roles.
