Shumiatcher Sandbox Series

The sad smile of a piano waltz. Opulence imprisoned in sepia tones. The stubborn majesty of a crumbling castle. Like all of our own journeys, Nathaniel Dunbar's story is a lingering taste of bittersweet. Fascinated by that particular flavour, composer/musicians Jeremy Sauer and Melanie Hankewich have crafted a musical narrative that will immerse you in both mortality and infinity.

Surrounded by the lush colour and fabric of turn-of-the-century theatre design, audiences will be treated to a series of visual and aural -- and, above all, emotional -- vignettes, each featuring the artists' own compositions married to memorable and startling images and instrumentation.

Sauer and Hankewich have been making music together for nearly 10 years, most recently as pianist and vocalist (respectively) with jazz trio The Continos. But when Sauer composed a waltz and played it for his friend and collaborator, something entirely different was born. Nathaniel Dunbar introduced himself, and, in a minor key that was impossible to refuse, asked that his story be told.
